RACE RECAP: BRADFORD VALENTINE’S RACE

by Julia Hardy

On Saturday, February 8th, the Striders were well-represented at the Bradford Valentine’s Race, comprising around one-quarter of approximately 400 participants. Beginning and ending at the First Church of Christ in the center of town, the 6K and 5-mile courses wound through residential neighborhoods near the Bradford Ski Area before merging again at the Bradford Country Club. While the day was brisk, in the 20’s °F, and sunny, even a slight breeze could turn into a strong headwind, especially while braving the course’s several hills. Along the last straightaway before the finish line, a bald eagle was spotted soaring on an updraft overhead. Finishers received a long-sleeved race shirt, a carnation of their color of choice, and a small box of chocolates. Several Striders also placed or won in their age groups; well done to all!

FUN FACT: One course of the Valentine’s Race is 6K, and the other is 5 miles, or 8K. Two courses, 6 + 8 = 14, 2/14 for Valentine’s Day. Very clever on the part of the race organizers, if this was actually their intention!
