Pam Reilly

Strider Spotlight
Pam Reilly

Pam grew up in Ingolstadt, Germany, known as the "City of Ideas".  Pam had a lot of her own ideas, the first one being "getting out of town as soon as humanly possible."  Her escape from Ingolstadt was the beginning of many international adventures.  She's lived in Europe, Asia, and a few cities in Massachusetts before settling in Haverhill with her husband, John.

Not including being chased by angry neighbors in Germany, Pam started running in 2013 at the urging of her best friend. Her first race was the Boston Marine Corps Honor Run 5K.  Realizing she actually liked running, she started searching the internet for running clubs on the North Shore.  She felt that MVS appealed to her the most, so much so that she and John moved from Lynnfield to Haverhill to be closer to club activities.

A marathoner, and ultra-marathoner, Pam's first marathon was the Miami Marathon in 2015.  After that experience, the rest was history.  She recently completed her 12th marathon.  After endless hours of training, on Wednesday, February 27th, Pam jumped on a 14 hour flight to run one of Asia's largest marathons, Tokyo.
On the plane, sporting compression socks, she noticed many passengers stretching and exercising in the aisles. She was in good company.  On Sunday, March 3rd, Pam lined up at the starting line with over 35,000 other athletes in steady rain on a cold, soggy morning.  Very appreciative of the many volunteers on the course, Pam notes they were very pleasant and happy to give their time to make sure each runner had what they needed whether it be a Pocari Sweat "Ion supply drink" or soup.  There were cooking stations along the route where volunteers cooked up batches of soup for the runners.  Both traditional familiar marathon tunes and Japanese pop music were played along the course. When Asian marathoners crossed the finish line they would stop to bow, which is a greeting as well as a gesture of respect. The runners would then proceed to the row of volunteers readily handing out water, towels, blankets and a medal to each finisher all with a congratulatory warm smile.  When asked what she thought about throughout the race, she said, "I kept thinking how much I loved Tokyo and how much I wanted to move there. Even though it was cold and rainy, and I was in pain, my love for East Asia was greater than the misery I experienced during the race."

Tokyo was Pam's fourth World Marathon Major, having previously ran Chicago, and, of course, Berlin and Boston.  She hopes to get into NYC and London soon.

Many of us have routines and superstitions before races, and Pam is no exception.  "I don’t drink any alcohol 30 days before a marathon and I stay away from bread at least two weeks out."  "And I take Imodium before each race. It’s good to stay loose in a race, but some things are better off not loose," she laughs.

"Running has shown me what I’m capable of doing and how strong my will is to do it once I’ve decided to undertake something," she says.

Her next goal is to train well enough so she can run the Berlin Marathon in September (for the fourth time) and complete the Three-Country Marathon through Austria, Germany and Switzerland one week later.

When asked what advice she could give people looking to run longer distances or tackling their first marathon, she offered this, "Talk to people who have more experience running longer distances but, at the same time, listen to your body first. Not every runner is the same: what works for others may not work for you."

In addition to volunteering for various events, Pam serves as Co-Chair of the Operations Committee to help give back.  She says, "MVS has helped me become a more confident runner. I’ve received a hundred useful tips from a score of fellow club members. Most of all, they’ve shown me how to be a dedicated runner while having fun doing it."

Super Iron Runner Series
Great job to all our Striders who participated in the first four series races of the year!
January 1 – Lowell, MA
Lowell’s First Run
First Run is always a favorite of many MVS members.  The late start and nearby location is a draw to many who wish to start the New Year off on the right foot, but who may have partied a bit too late the night before!

On a sunny and relatively warm New Year's Day, nineteen and a half (hi, Molly!) Striders braved the winds off the Merrimack to tackle 5K or 10K on the first of the year.  This was the first year Loco Races managed the race and they did not disappoint.  Clearly marked routes, plenty of beer and pizza greeted our hungov- I mean, hungry Striders.  New this year was a “community baked goods table.”  If you brought baked goods to share, you got free socks!   Hot cocoa too!
January 1  - Salisbury, MA
Hangover Classic - Over 40 Striders attended Salisbury Beach on New Year’s Day, running to support the Winner’s Circle Running Club, and also to log their first Iron Series race! With the sun shining and the cold blustery head wind many of us looked forward to that same wind at our backs pushing us to the finish line. Seen in the picture above the rough surf derailed our hopes of plunging into the frigid waters to earn a pint size Ocean Plunge glass; though our dreams were not completely shattered, by simply touching the water with your toe you were able to walk away with a glass.

Some of our very own Striders placed in their respective divisions. Congratulations to our 5K-placing-runners; Kali Otis, Valerie Giles, and Charlie Farrington, and in the 10K Tom Kinneman!

February 9 – Bradford, MA
Bradford Valentine Road Race
Our third Iron Runner Series race of 2019 brought us back to Bradford, MA for the 28th Annual Bradford Valentine Road Race.  This was a cold one with temperatures in the low to mid-20s, but that didn’t stop our hardy Striders from showing up and taking over the back corner!  The Valentine Race is also a club favorite.  We’re proud to be represented in the age group categories for the 5-miler by Josh Pelletier, 1st Place ( Male 14 and Under ) and Diane Jannetti, 1st Place ( Female 60-69). Members from the First Church Of Christ are always wonderful hosts, providing fresh fruit, yogurt, warm cider, as well as a small box of handmade chocolates and a flower to each registrant.   We felt the love as we all shared our love for running together.
St. Patty
March 16- Salisbury, MA The St. Patty's 5K/10K was another blustery Iron Series race in Salisbury. With our Iron Series runners opting for the 10K, many Striders had a successful run while enjoying the flat course, mild temperatures, and ocean views, despite the strong headwinds. Following the race was a pub crawl in Salisbury at Carousel, Uncle Eddie's, Dolphins, and Salisbury Sports Pub. Each participant received a free beer tab, pub crawl t-shirt, and a great start to the St. Patty's weekend!
