April Showers Bring May Flowers but at the Striders May general meeting the Striders showered local graduating student athletes with scholarship awards. The MVS scholarship committee chaired by Rebecca Pierce whittled down a large applicant pool and selected ten students who each receive a $2,000 scholarship. Recipients also receive membership in the Striders running group and entry into the Feaster Five Thanksgiving Day Road Race.
Candidates submitted details of their high school running, community and academic performance and wrote an essay answering the question "What running means to me !". Every students story is different yet there are common threads. All these recipients have excelled at their running skills through seasons of cross country, indoor track and outdoor track; they demonstrated their leadership skills by captaining their high school teams; they have overcome injuries and adversity both on and off the field; they have pursued academic excellence in their honors programs and studies and have participated in community or church activities. Congratulations to this year's recipients but also to their parents, their coaches, their teammates, their teachers, their community who helped them along the way.

Charlie Farrington reminded us all about the history of the Scholarship awards. After all, these are memorial awards that honor the memory of five Striders : Michael Dowe, Greg Gumbinner, Dean Peterson, Sam Denopoulos and Ralph Rockwood.
